# 1 Reason We Get Injured

Monday, April 18th, 2011

What’s the difference between someone who falls and gets injured and the person who hurts himself when he barely moves?

I submit to you the #1 reason is tension in the mind/body.

Let me explain:

Back in 1991, a client of mine, Raul, invited me to his ranch to go horseback riding. He mounted the best horse in the stable and saddled me on the “horse from hell.”

Perhaps he didn’t like how hard I was working him out in the gym and wanted to teach me a lesson. Or he might have been sadistic in nature. Either way, I was an experienced rider of horses, so I didn’t know I was seated on an evil one.

Five minutes later, I knew.

The beast took off on a gallop when he was supposed to be merrily trotting along. I noticed a group of trees in the distant and ascertained that this Hades horse was going to run me into them and either try to decapitate me or paralyze me for life.

Being that I didn’t want either of those two visions, I elected to do something crazy and unthinkable – to most. I stood up in the saddle as the horse galloped along. Then I pulled my left foot from the stirrup, lifted that leg as high as the saddle, leaned slightly to the right and jumped away from the horse.

My jump was no ordinary jump.

Instead of trying to land on my feet, I jumped up and away from the horse, tucked into a ball, and rolled sideways across the top of my shoulders.

As soon as I hit the ground I continued to roll. I spun onto my feet and was effortlessly brought to my feet by centrifugal force.

I breathed a sigh of relief and wiped my brow. Then, from 70 yards away, Raul, who had watched this entire scene unfold, yelled, “Nice fall, dude.”

Now let me ask: Why was I able to escape from this horse without an injury?

Two reasons.

One, I knew how to do a breakfall from my martial arts training.

And two, when I executed the breakfall I was totally relaxed. Even in the midst of a potential life-threatening situation, I was calm.

If, however, on the other hand, I executed the same breakfall with tension, nervousness and fear, I am certain I would have gotten injured.

So knowing what to do isn’t enough.

You’ve got to reach a point in which you know what to do and can relax while doing it.

The same reason the Fure-cat didn’t get injured is the same reason cats don’t get injured when they fall out of a tall building. Cats just relax and go with the flow.

What does this have to do with flexibility and stretching?

A lot.

When most people, stretch instead of relaxing – they increase the tension. They breathe improperly. They furrow their brows. They tell themselves
that “it hurts.”

This is not the WAY to quickly double your flexibility. The proper WAY is laid out for you in my Combat Stretching program.

As you’re watching the DVDs and following along with me keep in mind the importance of deep breathing and physical relaxation. When you do
this you’ll not only double your flexibility – you’ll also relax to the point where injuring yourself is a rare occurrence.

I’m Not Leaving Until …

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

Last night I was with my son at a local ball field, working on his hitting. There’s a semi-private field there with a fence (very important).

We like to go there in the early evening, when the sun isn’t so harsh. Oftentimes we begin by hitting off a tee, then I throw pitches.

Next to us is another ball field with the same set-up.  Another boy, Michael, and his father/coach are doing almost the same thing we’re doing.

He also happens to be on Frank’s AAU team – the Predators – who are currently ranked 1st in the state in the U10 division – and 4th in the nation.

Anyway, the GOAL is to work on hitting the ball over the fence. Not just to make contact.

Usually I ask my son before we begin, “How many do you want to hit over the fence today? What’s your goal?”

His best ever was 7 out of 8, off the tee. And three more when I’m throwing to him.

Well, last night several balls traveled far – but weren’t long enough to go yard.

After 30 minutes my wife and daughter showed. It was getting dark and they wanted to eat. But Frank had other ideas.

He said: “I’m not leaving until I knock one over the fence.”

“That’s what I like to hear,” I said.

Three swings later, he cracked a dinger that sailed 20 feet over the goal he had set.

“Let’s pick ’em up,” I said. “Always good to end on a positive note.”

Next to us, Michael knocks one out of the park, too. And he and his father begin to pack up.

“Nice whack,” I yelled over to Michael and his father.

And to this his father said, “When Michael sets a goal on how many he’s going to hit over at each practice, he’ll keep me out here until midnight if he has to.”

“That’s the kind of son and player you want, huh?” I replied.

“You got that right,” said the coach.

Both of these boys have an unbeatable man within them. And the more they practice setting daily goals and achieving them, the better they will become. Not just in baseball – but any area of life they set their radar on.

What about you?

How’s your focus, your commitment, your willingness to persist in the face of adversity?

Whatever level you’re at right now, I guarantee you it’ll sky rocket when you’re reading The Unbeatable Man – a book with success lessons you won’t receive in most “bubble-wrapped, mamby-pamby, over-coddled” so-called success environments.

Get the book NOW and become unbeatable yourself.

P.S. Here’s what an NBA Coach had to say about The Unbeatable Man:

The Unbeatable Man had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.  A riveting story about desire, overcoming obstacles, blocking out the negative and the heartland work ethic. Gives a rare and unique inside look at small town America, including family and parenting. As I read I found myself looking back on my own ‘glory days’ and to my amazement, I found many similarities in how Furey and I were striving to accomplish the same, even though he wrestled and I played basketball. This book will motivate and inspire you.”

He Punched Me

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

I’ve thrown and landed a lot of punches in my life. 99% of the time the punches were physical. But best-selling author Steve Chandler believes my best one may have come from my pen.

“Matt Furey’s exciting story reads like an adventure novel. He writes with the grace of Ernest Hemingway while his ideas and exciting message floor you like a punch from Jack Dempsey. This book is TOTALLY INSPIRED. It shows how we too can do this… we can be unbeatable like the hero of this book.”

Author of Fearless

Thank you, Steve. As the saying goes, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” With The Unbeatable Man I guess we can say it’s mightier than a punch.

The Decision

Monday, April 11th, 2011

Here’s a review that recently came in for The Unbeatable Man:

“There are certain people that seem to make a decision, develop a focus or a drive towards a goal at a very early age and never deviate. It doesn’t seem to matter what the goal is. I’ve seen it in actors and scientists, pilots and soldiers. Matt Furey made just this kind of decision about the time he was a freshman in high school. His goal was wrestling and he stuck with it through the difficult years of high school where it is easy for young men to move in the direction of festivities, girls and drugs to their detriment. It’s also important to remember that intermediate goals change from time to time. Being the best in high school gets replaced at graduation. In Mr. Furey’s case it then became being the best in college, then on to the nationals and internationals. Eventually those goals have to be replaced as the body ages and younger stars come along. But the training and the focus that lead to wrestling championships took him to sharing his insights into business, fitness and personal development that became sold out seminars and eventually this book. He shares his philosophies, his knowledge with other people that just may help them to succeed in their own lives.”

The Danger of Big Muscles

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Listen to the personal trainers and fitness experts talk. It’s all about the muscles, the muscles and the muscles.

How big are your guns?

How ripped are your abs?

How massive are your pecs?

Let me tell you what you get when your focus is primarily on the muscles: a body that is MORE injury prone than ever before.

Why? Because critical areas of the body were totally neglected – and these areas happen to connect your muscles to your bones.

Yes, I’m talking about your tendons.

We’ve been sold a bill of goods on big muscles. The size of a muscle has absolutely NOTHING to do with how strong, how fast or how explosive you are.

Proof of this can be readily seen by watching a deer leap an eight-foot fence without a warm-up.

Now, how massive are the legs of a deer?

The deer’s legs appear to be little more than tendon and bone. Sure, there’s muscles – but they ain’t HUGE.

Believe me, due to genetics, I have legs that are bigger than the norm. Yet, I’d trade my legs in for a skinnier pair if this helped me leap eight-foot fences with ease.

I’m all about function. What can you do with your body.

And if you want to begin to begin to realize incredible strength, power and explosiveness, you start focusing on the areas of the body that are most easily injured.

These are:

1. Wrists

2. Ankles

3. Shoulders

4. Pelvis – including lumbar and sacrum

5. Knees

6. Elbows

7. Upper Spine – including thoracic and cervical vertebrae

Make a note: None of the above are muscle groups – yet, if you’ll look at your own history of injuries or pain, chances are excellent that the majority of your challenges are located in these seven areas.

I know a man who sustained a tendon injury in his elbow – while working his muscles. After six weeks of rest, he was no better off.

Yet, after one week of tendon exercises from my Carpal Tunnel Fix program (and he didn’t even have carpal tunnel) – his pain was G-O-N-E.

How can this be?

Well, your tendons connect your muscles to your bones. This means they are tied into everything you do. Yet, they’re totally neglected.

And this is precisely why you see people who look powerful and massive going down with injuries that don’t make sense.

No matter how big your legs, you don’t want to rupture an Achilles’ tendon.

And no matter how big your guns, if you have hand, wrist, elbow or shoulder pain – you’ve got a tendon problem.

The same can be said of all the other “easy injury” areas I mentioned.

Eliminate or avoid the tendency or likelihood of injuring your wrists and elbows.

Get Fit in Less Than a Minute

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Patience is a virtue. So is speed. And in our fast-paced world it is so easy to say “I don’t have time” instead of “I’ll make time.”

But making time for exercise is hard when you have an internal conflict.

What is that internal conflict.

It’s two competing thoughts:

“Yes, I’d like to get fit but … I don’t have time for exercise.”

Well, I have a quick and easy cure for this type of thinking, and lest you think it’s a boot to the arse – or the head – you’d be wrong.

All I do is try to get people to live life in the smallest chunks they can.

Let me explain: I hate flying. Yet, I go on some extremely long flights. Los Angeles to Shanghai is one of them, and that puppy is 13+ hours.

For a man who likes everything “now” – for a man who is not what I’d call patient – that’s a long flight. So how do I stay sane on the flight.

Very simple. Whenever the issue of time comes up, I ignore it – or I focus on living “one minute at a time.” Not one day. Not one hour. One minute.

“Can I get through one minute of flying” I ask myself.

“Yes, I can do that.”

“Good, then let’s focus on that one minute, right now – not the other 12 hours and 59 minutes that haven’t come yet.”

This same way of thinking works great for exercise, too.

Get up in the morning. Think about exercising. When you do so, if you feel resistance, tell yourself, “Let’s just do one minute of wall chair. Can you do that?”

[ The wall chair is on pages 42-43 in Combat Conditioning. ]

“Yes.”

After that, ask yourself if you’d like to do one minute of pushups – or just one minute holding the pushup position. Or one minute of bridging. Or one minute of deep breathing.

And if a minute is too long for you – how about 30 seconds. You may not realize it, but by doing an exercise for 8 to 30 seconds, two to three times per week, you can burn up to 525% more fat than anything else you do. I cover this in illustrious detail in my program, The Fastest Way Humanly Possible to Burn Fat .

So, can you dramatically affect change in your body in one minute.

The answer is: Hell yeah. You can even do so in LESS than a minute.

And the good news is that when you can conquer one minute – or 30 seconds – and you enjoy that moment in time, you’ll want to go for a second and a third minute – and so on. Yet the desire for you to do more comes organically.

No pushing, prodding or flogging yourself to be motivated.

Use this method and I assure you that you’ll be kicking butt in no time flat.

Best,

Matt Furey
