Expect versus Want

Is there a difference between expecting to win and wanting to win?

You better believe it.

The other night I was watching highlights of the MLB playoffs.

The announcer began talking about the two teams to make the World Series – Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals.

And then the following was reportedly said by the Rangers Josh Hamilton. To paraphrase:

Last year we wanted to win the World Series. This year we expect to win it.

There is a HUGE difference between expecting to win and wanting to win. It’s as big a difference as wanting to get pregnant and expecting to deliver a newborn baby..

One you’d like to see happen. It’s a preference. The other is something you demand of yourself and command into reality.

Now, to be fair, we don’t know the mindset of the St. Louis Cardinals right now. Do they want to win or expect to win? No report on that one – but I’m betting there manager, Tony LaRussa, who’s been to the big show several times, and won it more than once, isn’t going there for a picnic and photo op.

So what happens when you have two teams in a championship series who expect to win?

Who wins?

Well, you’ll find the answer to this question in my book, Expect to Win – Hate to Lose.
