How to Deal With Ups and Downs

The great American writer, Louisa May Alcott once

wrote, ‘I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning

how to sail my ship.’

This is sage advice for anyone starting out in business

today – and it’s something I had to learn.

When you first begin learning anything new, even if there

is a bit of frustration – there is also a lot of excitement.

Creative juices flow and life passes by so fast you wonder

how what seemed like 15 minutes lasted for several hours.

But when times get tough, when there are storms, we often

forget that we are learning something; we’re learning how to

sail our ships; how to navigate our businesses; how to speak

so people will listen; how to write effectively; how to paint;

how to listen and how to get fit.

When things look UP – we tend to feel UP. But that’s easy to

do. It’s when things look down that we must learn to feel UP.

Not in the sense of ‘everything is wonderful’ if it isn’t – but in

the sense of ‘I’m going to get through this. I’m going to turn

this adversity into an advantage. I’m going to make something

good come from this.’

Napoleon Hill wrote, ‘Every adversity carries with it the seed of

an equivalent or greater benefit.’ When you’re in pain you may

resist such a statement – but I’ve yet to find this statement in

error – perhaps because I’m always looking for the seed of the

equivalent or greater benefit.

Many people don’t know this, but when Dr. Maltz became an intern,

he called his father and told him that he finally received the clothes

of a doctor. He was so proud and wanted his father to see him. So

his father told his young son he’d be right over.

On the way to the hospital, Dr. Maltz’ father was hit by a car and

killed.

Can you imagine the grief – and the guilt he felt afterward. All the

statements of, ‘If only I hadn’t made that call. If I’d have told my

father to come tomorrow, not today.’

It took some time for the young Dr. Maltz to recover – but recover

he did. And he went on to write a book, Psycho-Cybernetics, that

has sold 30 million copies worldwide.

The essence of the book is that although 1.5 percent of the population

have some sort of disfigurement that can be corrected via plastic surgery

– the other 98.5 percent have an INNER scar. Some hurt, heartache, mis-

fortune, failure, bankruptcy or blunder – and these painful experiences can

also be removed. Not by a surgeon’s scalpel – but by YOU – in the Theatre

of your own Mind.

A lot of people equate Dr. Maltz work with visualization – and there is that

element to it. But his work goes FAR beyond visualization.

Recently Mike Storms, a friend and client, wrote to tell me he had spoken

to two people who claim to be followers of what I teach. To his amazement

both of them admitted that they had never read Psycho-Cybernetics – or

gotten the advanced course in Zero Resistance Living.

He was dumbfounded. In his email to me he wrote:

‘I was expounding on the phone to both of them yesterday about

Zero Resistance Living and its impact on me, my kids, my students

and clients and players…

To my amazement they haven’t gotten the course yet, and didn’t even

sound like they wanted to, or realized that they are missing out; the ease

of success and the ability to make things appear in their life out of thin air.

Forgive me for saying it this way, Matt, but how do they follow you and not

read what in my opinion is the foundation of your empire (both seen and

unseen).’

In response to Mike’s letter I wrote, ‘People want to believe that success

boils down to the physical or visible mechanics. Yet, 90% of success is how

you use your mind and most people have absolutely no clue as to how they

use their own mind.’

Truth is, if you don’t know how you’re using your own mind, how can you

improve upon it – and how can you use it BETTER in order to get from life

what you truly desire.

Best,

Matt Furey
