Should You Exercise Everyday?

How lazy can I be – or should I be? That’s the

thinking of many who embark upon an exercise

program.

And you’ve got a bunch of idiot marketers out there

telling you that one workout per week – or per month –

will give you all the results you want.

Might as well start out being weekend warriors as soon

as we’re born. Do nothing during the week – then go out

on Saturday and get hurt playing the game as hard as

you can. Doooiiii.

Let’s examine an animal in the wild.

Does the ape ever say, ‘I trained my lats really hard

yesterday climbing all those trees. I’m going to take a

week off so I recover.’

Does a deer ever say, ‘You know, I ran about 40 miles

yesterday. My hoofs are tired. I think that should do for

a month.’

Does a shark ever quit swimming because he’s already

eaten enough?

The answer to all the above is a big, bold ‘NO.’

Animals in the wild do something every single day. They

don’t think of it as exercise, as training, or as pumping

up.

Now, let’s take the human being. First thing he must do before

he can begin training is put on the hat of the scientist.

He must read 20-30 books on exercise physiology. Then he must

read all the latest studies coming from Harvard, Berkeley, Rutgers,

Duke, Yale and Stanford.

After that he needs to ask everyone he knows what their opinions

are.

After that he’s exhausted, plops his rumpus on the couch and watches

tee-vee.

The next day he wakes up tired – weaker than the day before – but feeling

superior and smart because he’s read all the studies and supposedly

‘educated’ himself.

Now, what I have just described is REAL. Very real. It’s the life of your

average – well, that’s being kind – let’s make that ‘below average’ –

idiot drifter.

In contrast let’s look at the person who lives inside his own body, pays

attention to its signals – and does something according to what the

signals are saying.

For example, if the person gets up in the morning and feels tired, he

does some simple stretches and deep breathing exercises, just like

a cat or dog will do – and this energizes his body immediately.

Or he’ll go for a walk and whilst moving his feet forward, he’ll begin

to ponder what he wants to accomplish during the day. He pictures

what he wants and by the time the walk is over – he’s flying high.

He can’t wait to get started with his day – when the truth is he has

already begun. He’s done the most important thing he can do – and

that is ‘rev up the engine.’

Now, there are those who will train like a mad-man or mad-woman

on certain days. They’ll turn exercise time into ‘beat my body up a

bit so that it gets stronger’ time.’

And the next day, if this person is sore or overly tired, he’ll lighten

the load significantly. He may only go for a walk or do some

stretching – but mark my words, he’ll do something.

He understands that the human body was given to you as a gift –

and if you don’t take care of it, it’ll be taken away from you sooner

rather than later. So he always, always, always does SOMETHING.

As Eugen Sandow once said, ‘Life is movement.’

Life is NOT sitting around reading but not doing. Reading is good.

It’s important. But far too many people are looking for ALL the

answers before they’ll do something – and this is the wrong approach.

If you want to learn – and learn fast – you study a little – then you do

something right away. This method will teach you far more than reading

everything before you do something.

When I read a book, if Chapter One – or the first section contains a lot

of great information, I do not go on to Chapter Two until I’ve done

something with what I’ve just read. My job is not to be a professional

underliner, high-lighter or reader. My job is to be a professional DOER.

The rewards in life go to the DOERS – not to those who simply sit around

reading and studying.
