One evening, in front of a packed house of 13,000 + screaming fans, a wrestler came up short once again.
He lost.
And immediately upon losing, he was so humiliated he didn’t simply walk off the mat with his head down.
He fell to his knees and crawled off the mat.
At the edge he broke down and cried.
He cried in front of an entire auditorium of people and begged his coach – whom he previously ignored, to show him THE WAY.
“Please help me,” he cried.
The coach listened. He took the man under his wings and worked with him personally.
He tested him by teaching him a secret he rarely taught anyone. It was reserved for those who asked and were willing to pay the price in terms of action.
The student followed the coach’s advice exactly as stated. So he taught him another secret to test him further. Once again, the student did as advised.
Over time there wasn’t a single shred of advice the master coach taught that the athlete didn’t listen to, practice and use.
Did the master coach’s advice give the athlete an EDGE over the others.
YES.
The following season the man went undefeated en route to winning a national title.
Did the extra coaching pay off? You betcha.
Yes, each and every wrestler who spent time in a Dan Gable practice learned a lot from him. But there’s a big difference between being in a Gable practice and getting private time with the master himself.
Those who asked for help and did as he advised became champions. Those who didn’t ask for help – or asked but refused to follow his advice – well, they never quite made it to the top.
The moral of the story:
If you ask a coach for help and do as he advises, you will succeed. If you don’t ask and don’t do as instructed, you probably won’t find yourself at the top.
