Grow Younger With Combat Stretching
It’s often said that when people begin to age,
the first thing they lose is their flexibility. If
this is true, one of the secrets to reversing
the aging process is increasing your flexibility.
The more flexible your muscles, the more flexible
your mind – and the more energy you have to
live life to the full.
Thing is, when most people stretch, they go
about it the wrong way. They don’t use the
principles I teach in Combat Stretching, http://mattfurey.com/combat_stretching.html
principles that will double your flexibility in
one workout.
Here are some mistakes I see people making
when they stretch:
1. Frowning or tensing of the face – tense facial
muscles send a message to your brain and central
nervous system to contract and hold.
2. Holding the breath – if you hold your breath
the muscles hold onto their stiffness and rigidity.
3. Wrong mental picture – if you carry an image
of being tight as a drum your body will act the
same way.
4. Lack of focus on muscle being stretched – when
you hear of someone tearing a muscle while
stretching, it means the person was unconscious
while stretching. The mind was somewhere else.
5. Improper nutrition – yes, some foods contribute
to increased flexibility and some do not; just as
some foods help with endurance or strength.
Anyone who thinks what you put in your mouth
makes no difference in your results is ignorant.
6. Doing dumb stretches – you see a lot of people
working hard on stretches for their triceps or biceps
or calves. Nothing wrong with doing these stretches
except that when you compare them to the wrestler’s
bridge or the gymnastic bridge – there is no
comparison. Do stretches that have a bigger
positive effect on the whole system.
7. Forcing results – to make progress you do not
need to use a cattle prod or a whip. Much more
can be accomplished if you relax and breathe
while holding a new mental picture of how
flexible you want to be. Whenever you try to
force things, you’re increasing the chance of
injury, which means you’ll have to start all over
again.
I teach all the above in far greater detail in my
