My first rude awakening in teaching others how to
get fit took place in February of 1987; nearly 20
years ago.
I just signed up my first client for personal training;
a 16-year old who hadn’t done a lick of exercise
beyond the schools P.E. program – assuming they
even had one.
I had recently finished college – and prior to training
this young man, the ONLY people I was ever around
were college or Olympic athletes. The only exception
to this was the wrestling camps I worked around the
country during the summers.
At these camps some of the kids were superstars;
some were good; and a lot were so-so.
But one thing held constant, when Sgt. Furey (that’s
what the kids called me back then) barked out an
order for a specific number of pushups – it was ‘so
let it be spoken, so let it be done.’
If I said, ‘Drop down and give me 50 pushups’ the
kids cracked ’em out.
So imagine my deep surprise, if not outright disgust,
when I told my first client, John, to do 25 pushups,
25 situps and 10 pullups … for starters.
The dude couldn’t do 5 pushups – and the five he could
do weren’t too doggone good. He couldn’t do more than a
couple situps – and a single pullup was out of the question.
At first I honestly thought he was faking it. I just could
not believe that a 16-year old boy could not do pullups,
pushups and so on. Yet, he wasn’t faking it. He truly could
not do them.
The good news is that John stuck with me and the program
I had to tailor to him – and a year later he was no longer a
kid. He was a man.
When I was training kids in California I saw this scenario
time and again.
Had a 12-year old boy, Brian, who came to me for training. He
was obese and told me that it was heriditary. I told him that was
bull-crap.
I took him out to ‘walk’ up a steep hill because I knew he couldn’t
run it. He was walking it at a snail’s pace, on purpose, and refused
to walk briskly. When I pushed him to give it his best, he said, ‘If
you don’t quit telling me to go faster I’m going to quit and you won’t
have my mom’s money anymore.’
In response I said, ‘Kid, go ahead and quit then because I don’t
need your mom’s money. I’m here to get you in shape. If you
won’t follow the program you’re better off going home.’
Brian turned right around and walked home. He quit on the spot.
Two years later he came back to my training center with his
father, asking to be re-instated. He apologized for quitting
and for his attitude. He asked for a second chance. Well, being that
I previously trained his older brother – and he went from fat to
fit in a matter of six months – I figured I’d give the boy a second
go-round so that I would be two-for-two (Note: We Fure-cat’s don’t
like losing.)
Brian was about 40 pounds heavier than when he quit, and it wasn’t
height he put on either – it was pure lard.
I put Brian on a program that started slowly and gradually built him
up. He did everything I told him to do. And six months later his big
gut and excess lard were gone.
The moral of the story is simple: These were young kids who should
have been able to do some very basic exercises – yet they couldn’t.
If that’s the case with kids today – what about the adults? What
about the men and women in their 40’s, 50’s and beyond?
Well, in case you fit into the 40 and up category, rest assured that
I understand your situation. And I’ve coached a lot of people through
it. Many of the Furey Faithful got started with a Hindu Pushup or two;
with 5-10 Hindu Squats; with a stroll around the block; with a minute of
exercise.
Gradually these men and women added to what they did – and before
they knew it they were like new.
Today, although I no longer meet with and train one person after the
other all day long, I do teach my life-changing knowledge via my
courses as well as through the on-going support and help of the Matt
Furey Inner Circle – http://www.mattfurey.com/furey_inner_circle.html
Those who are a part of it get a montlhy newsletter and CD that
teaches you what to do on an on-going basis. In addition to that
you get access to a private and exclusive online forum wherein
you can ask questions as often as you like and get the help,
motivation and internal drive you want.
Membership in my Inner Circle is your ticket to greatness in 2006.
Seriously – take a look at it. You get seven bonus gifts when you
enroll NOW and these gifts alone, if purchased separately, cost more
than the Inner Circle membership itself.
So come on – get with MY program. Don’t make me chase you up
the hill to join. It’s the right thing to do. You know it. I know it. Now
let’s get down to business.
Kick butt – take names,
