The ultimate measure of a man is not where he
stands in moments of comfort and convenience,
but where he stands at times of challenge
and controversy.
–Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968)
American civil rights leader
The kids have today off – so this will be a
quick note.
In high school, the MOST inspiring and uplifting
film I ever watched was Martin Luther King, Jr.’s
immortal, “I Have a Dream Speech.”
Last year I put it on my blog – so you can search it
there or just hit the search engines. It’s well worth
watching each year around this time – if not more
often.

As for yesterday’s ice bowl in Green Bay – well, it’s not the
exact equivalent of the Civil Rights movement – that was
pure guts – but if there’s anything that comes close, it’s
the coaches, players and fans who take to the outdoors in
-24 degrees wind chill – and love it.
Wow.
What a game.
The New England v. San Diego game was not nearly as
exciting – in part because there was too much comfort.
No big deal to play in 32 degree weather compared to
Green Bay.
Playing ball in those conditions is ALL about being
mentally tough. Wimps cannot function in a game
like we saw last night.
More importantly, in this game we saw, once again,
how you’ve got to let your mistakes GO. You’ve got
to keep your head up and try, try again.
This is what New York had to do. Bring in a kicker who’d
missed two chip-shot field goals and let him try to kick
a 47-yarder.
In the ice bowl of Green Bay, no opposing team had ever kicked a
field goal beyond 40 yards in the post-season. The previous longest
field goal was only 38 yards.
Well, Lawrence Tynes redeemed himself, didn’t he. He drilled the
ball right through the uprights.
I hate the Gi-ants. But I respect winners and the GIANTS proved they
deserve to be in the Big One.
Congrats to them and the Patriots. What a game that will be.
Look – if you believe a bit of Martin Luther King’s, Tom Brady’s, as
well as the Packers and Giants mental toughness can make your life
better – then I strongly urge you to take a look at two of my programs:
