Exercises that Age Your Body Faster

25 years ago, I read a non-western point of view about exercise that I’d never heard before.

The point of view seemed completely and totally untrue, implausible and biased.

To summarize, exercises like running and weight training – as well as all sports, cause you to age faster.

Can’t be true, I thought. There’s just no way that making your body physically fit can cause you to age faster. After all, what happens to a body that never gets any exercise?

It atrophies and ages faster than can be imagined.

If you’ve ever been in a cast for a few weeks, you know what your arm or leg looks like when it’s freed.

Not good.

Over the years I’ve pondered this notion of aging again and again. And I’ve come to a number of conclusions.

To me, it’s not so much that most exercises or sports age you faster. It’s the simple fact that most people are continually adding tension to their mind-body on a daily basis. And this tension causes blockages in the flow of energy in your body. These blockages then lead to pain, injury or disease.

Now, what do most forms of exercise ask you to do?

Answer: Add tension.

From my own experience and the experience of those whom I’ve trained in recent years, they will gladly tell you that this build-up of tension gradually causes your body to wear out faster.

Believe me now and listen to me later, you can find plenty of martial arts masters who need new hips by the age of 40. The same goes for elite wrestlers.

That’s a little young, don’t you think?

If you’ve been around former football players – many of them are physical wreaks. One of my good friends was hobbling around on bad hips in his mid-20’s. Plenty of other former football players aren’t doing so well mentally, either. All the helmet-to-helmet crashes don’t do much for your memory, that’s for sure.

As for those who lift weights, they’ve often touted the idea that bigger and stronger muscles mean reduced chance of injury.

Not so fast, Sonny. Ever take a look at the injury reports in the NFL, MLB, NBA and so on? At the professional level, you’re supposed to be the biggest, strongest, fastest – most ELITE of them all – and yet, breakdowns are happening all over the field – in practice as well as games.

Think about this for a second. When you train with weights you intentionally shorten your muscles (the tendons shorten, too)  – and whether you realize it or not – the “pump” you seek is tension that makes you less mobile. It also ages you faster.

So how on earth can this tension, as well as this shortening lead to an injury-proof body or a body that is less likely to get injured?

It cannot.

Now, unlike years ago, I will no longer say that you should never lift weights. I think weights have a time and place. I also believe there is a way to train with them that can be helpful, provided you know how to release the tension and lengthen the shortened muscles/tendons through other means.

But you’re not seeing that in the strength whirld.

On the other hand, the exercises I teach, increase your strength without increasing tension. They lengthen your muscles and tendons – giving you MORE flexibility and greater access to your athleticism.

Do they guarantee a life that is longer than someone who trains another way?

Guarantee?

I don’t think so. You cannot guarantee the length of someone’s life.
