How Tom Brady Wrecked His Knee

Monday, September 8th, 2008

A few weeks ago my son and I went to watch a preseason game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New England Patriots. Both of us hoped to at least see Tom Brady on the sidelines. Neither of us expected to see him play, though.

Imagine our disappointment when he wasn’t even in the stadium. Nowhere to be found. I found that odd. Afterall, he is a member of the team, isn’t he. Everyone else was there, including Randy Moss, Wes Welker and the head coach. No one else was taking a day off. Why was he.

Anyway, yesterday we tuned into the Patriots v. Chiefs game in the second quarter. And once again, no Tom Brady. This time however, he was in the stadium and he had gotten dressed. He’d even played a few downs.

Where was he now. He was in the locker room having his knee examined. Later in the day it was announced that he may be out for the season. Today it looks official.

If you go back and view the play in which Brady got injured, you’ll find that he was out of position. At the completion of the throw, instead of having a strong base, he was off-balance, straight-legged and totally vulnerable. He didn’t even get hit hard when he was in this position. He’s taken far worse licks than what came his way.

But when you’re out of position, when your body is off-balance, it doesn’t take much to get injured.

This is critically important in today’s world. If you look at the players who get injured and study how

they got injured, you will see this same pattern played over and over.

Why.

Because in most sports, balance is assumed. It is NOT taught. This is a huge mistake because almost all injuries come from being out of balance. If your posture and structure are right, it is very difficult to get injured. If your structure is off, even just a little bit, it could be doomsday.

I feel for Tom Brady. He’s one of my favorite players. But I also feel for any athlete, great or not, who was never taught what I’ve learned in my study of Chinese kung fu.

Having phenomenal balance is critical, especially as you age. It’s not uncommon to see people getting hurt stepping sideways off the curb. Why. Balance, posture and weakness due to lack of training.

My Dao Zou program will go a long way in helping to restore good balance in your life – physically and otherwise. It will help give you the feeling of agelessness – opening you up to realms of fitness and health you never thought possible.

P.S. Funny, but after watching the Patriots preseason game, and not being impressed with their reserve quarterbacks, I said, “They better invest in a good back-up. Right now everything depends on Brady. And if he goes out with an injury, the team is in BIG trouble. They need to be like the 49’ers were with Montana and Young. If one quarterback goes out – another guy comes in who is just as devastating, if not more so. I’m sorry to see Brady’s injury. But I think Patriots’ fans are even more sorry. They’ll be lucky to have a .500 season.

Hope in Beijing

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

Last November I consulted with a lady who competed in Atlanta, in Sydney and in Athens as a Paralympian – i.e. an Olympian who is not 100% “able bodied.”

The woman’s name: Hope Lewellen. Her goal: to be in her 4th Paralympic games this September in Beijing.

Her sport: sitting volleyball.

Thing is that Hope would be 41 years old if she qualified for the team – and her upper body was thrashed from years of weight training and other exercises.

She began doing Combat Conditioning because it made sense to her that bodyweight exercises were what she needed for greater strength and endurance -not weights. Within a short period of time using the exercises I gave her she felt much better – but she wanted a specialized program, so she came to see me.

I worked with her for a couple hours and filmed the routine I gave her. Members of the Matt Furey Inner Circle received a copy of the DVD.

Months later Hope’s body was in better shape than before – and when all the qualifying rounds were over, she found herself fulfilling her goal of being in a 4th Paralympic Games.

I’ve been checking to see how she and the other U.S. athletes are doing to beihing2008.com.

I watched the opening ceremonies last night on a Chinese channel we have playing in our home. Once again, just like the Olympic Games held last month – they were incredible. The stadium was packed. It has to be the ultimate thrill for Hope to be there – and I’m rooting for her and the U.S. Women’s team to win it all.

BTW, if you’d like to see Hope’s profile you can go here.

In honor of Hope and the other athletes, I’m going to reopen my inventory blowout special for a couple days. Go here and grab some product at half off the normal amount.

Best,

Matt Furey
