The Talent Curse

Last weekend my son struck out the side in a baseball game.

The next day a friend came over to work out with us.
He asked how the game went and I gave him the scoop about how my youngin’ whiffed three batters in a row.
He then turns to my son and says, “You’re a natural.”
I immediately recoiled and said, “He’s a natural at knowing he better practice if he’s going to be any good.”
There are two extremes when it comes to coaching.
One is to criticize severely and never offer anything positive.
The other is to flatter and praise too early and too often, which can and often does cause the person being stroked to lose interest. After all, if you’re being
coddled before victory, what’s the point in striving to succeed?
I prefer the middle path. It’s called teaching those you love and those you coach to practice, practice, practice.
Regardless of who praises you and for what – you practice.
Regardless of who criticizes you and for what – you practice.
I believe in praising others for that which deserves praise and can be duplicated.
Telling someone he’s a natural is not one of those situations. It’s feedback that does nothing to move you along the path. It makes you stop and think, “Am I really?” instead of thinking, “What can I DO to get even better?”
“You’re a natural,” someone says.
“So what?” I reply.
Saying someone is a natural is yet another way to claim a person’s talent is genetic – and most people are programmed to believe that genetics rule the world. They don’t. I’ve beaten plenty of the so-called genetic freaks in my day – and watched tons of others lose to those who were willing to train.
Show me how you practice – and later still, how you play – and even more so, how you react to victory – as well as defeat – then we’ll see how ‘natural’ you are.
When you are at your best, when you’re most natural at what you do – that’s the day when you know you’ve put in your time and paid your dues via the power of repetition.
That’s the moment in time when you know what it really feels like to feel natural.
When it comes to physical fitness and weight loss, have you swallowed the genetics pie.

The Power of a Samurai

‘Deep breathing alone has made many a weak man strong and many a sick man well.’

These words come from the immortal teachings of Martin ‘Farmer’ Burns – but they could have just as easily come from the ancient Samurai of Japan – or the old-time Jiu-Jitsu masters.

For example, in a 1911 book on Japanese exercise methods that I read many years ago, I recorded the following:

‘The ancient samurai was accustomed to going out into the open air as soon as he rose in the morning. There he devoted at least 10 or 15 minutes to continued deep breathing, standing with his hands on his hips in order that he might feel the play of his muscles.’

Breathing in the open air was also recommended by Farmer Burns as well early American fitness pioneers such as Charles Atlas, Bernarr MacFadden and Paul Bragg. These men truly knew what they were talking about.

Today, in most fitness programs taught around the world, deep breathing is practically ignored. This is a major mistake as, to quote one of my former teachers, ‘Your breath is your power.’

You can tell a lot about a person simply by observing how he or she breathes. In fact, I believe you can map out the structure of how the person lives life.
Shallow breathers tend to be shallow people. Deep breathers tend to be interested in far more than the superficial.

The sound a person makes when breathing, especially while exercising, is also revealing. Does he or she have a problem with being seen or heard? You’ll
know by whether or not you can hear the person breathing. Does this person breathe in a way that says, ‘life is a struggle’ – or in a way that shows how they simply ‘flow?’

Maybe you’ve never paid much attention to the subject of deep breathing before. For the first 25 years of my life I didn’t either. Yet, I assure you, life is much better when you’re in tune with how you breathe.

Pay attention to your breathing. Make sure it is deep and full.

Spend 10-15 minutes per day with the Combat Conditioning System and you’ll readily understand why your breath is your power.

The Chinese ‘F’

Not sure if you’ve ever heard of the so-called Chinese ‘F.’

It’s a different standard of excellence, that’s for sure.
Imagine a child coming home from school. He shows his parents his report card. His parents are horrified. They go ballistic.
Why? Because their child got an A- in a class.
That’s right. A+’s and A’s are acceptable – but not an A-.
Now, being my wife is Chinese, you may wonder if this is how we approach school with our children.
Both of my children are very good students. But it is not a requirement to live peacefully in our home. So long as they are doing their best – and they’re also balanced, i.e. participating in other activities and doing well – then we see no reason whatsoever to demand straight A’s – much less A+’s.
One thing is for certain: An A- (A minus) is A-okay in my book.
Parents who teach their children that getting straight A’s is the key to success in life are living in the dark ages. Or, to be more accurate, at least 50 years behind the times.
The other day my son came home from school and said, “John told me that unless you get a master’s degree in college you’re never going to make it in the business world.”
My son already smelled B.S. and wasn’t asking my opinion, but I gave it anyway.
“To quote Bill Gates in a boardroom meeting, dealing with recent MBA grads who think they’re smarter than all get-out: ‘That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard in my life.”
Oh, and by the way, BG didn’t graduate from college. Neither did Steve Jobs. And the list can go on and on and on.
I think parents would be a lot better off teaching their children about the truly important keys to success in this world. Sadly, the majority are not taught in our school system. You need to find a coach, mentor or parent who knows them and is willing to pass them on to you.
Perhaps the biggest KEY is physical fitness. Show me a straight A+ student who is overweight, and they’re rampant, and I’ll show you someone whose future is already going dim.
To succeed in life you need to be healthy. And the fatter you are at a young age, the harder life will be. So get your children fit. Get them involved in sports. Get them exercising. Limit their time before the tee-vee, the time they spend with their gadgets, the time they spend in the passive position.
Get them active and involved.
That’s A number one.
After that, teach your children the importance of attitude. Get them over the whining stage as fast as possible. Teach them to set and achieve goals. Show them how to visualize and create the life they want.
Be a model of an A+ Attitude – and showcase how attitude determines altitude.
Teach your child how to defend himself – verbally as well as physically.
Teach your child that book smart doesn’t mean a cotton picking thing in the real world. Teach him to learn as much as he can in school – but instill that the real lessons take place outside the classroom, rather than in it.
Above all, get your child around positive influencers. No matter what you do “right” for your child, if he’s around the go-nowhere crowd, this factor alone will drive him down.

Lady’s Shoulder Pain Fixed in Minutes
