Ageless Exercises Work Wonders

Hi Jerome,

Here’s the sad truth – although exercise is great

for getting you physically fit – if you overdo it, it

may not extend your life.

After the age of 40 you’ll see many hard-core

martial artists going to tai chi and other ‘softer’

forms. There is a reason.

Karl Gotch Dead at 82

Karl Gotch, the man who taught me Hindu Squats,

Hindu Pushups and bridging – as well as a plethora of

catch wrestling and conditioning drills – died yesterday

morning at the age of 82.

I met Karl face-to-face for the first time in April of

1999. And after spending four days with him, my wife

and I made the decision to leave California

to come train with him.

At the time I first met Karl he was in dire need of having

both his hips replaced due to osteo-arthritis brought about

by his bout with starvation during WW II. I took him to a

number of surgeons until we finally found someone who

would accept him as a patient. As both of his hips were

100% bone on bone he elected to have both hips done

at the same time – an astronomical feat for a man in his

mid 70’s – but there was no other choice as he couldn’t

rehab one replaced hip on another one that was bone-on-


Each day I visited Karl in the hospital and later when he was

moved to a convalescent home for recovery. On his own

he figured out the best way to rehab his body as the physical

therapists knew FAR less about training than he did.

Karl often said, “If I relied on what those idiots had me doing I’d

never be able to walk.”

I still remember the surprise on Karl’s face when I brought him

his first check for a video we had done together. He was elated.

He just stared and stared at the amount.

“Karl, my goal is to make you more money per year than your biggest

year in pro wrestling,” I said.

He smiled.

We continued to have lunch together and get together for training

at the gym. Many grappling fans came and watched as he taught me holds

that no one else had ever seen before. Even though he’d had both hips

replaced he could still get on the mat and show everything he taught

when he was in full stride. He was mean, ornery and cantankerous, and

all of us loved him for it.

Today, the reality of mortality is at hand. A teacher of mine, a man

who played an instrumental part in my life has passed on. I love

the man for what he taught me and for all the GOOD things he

I’m Talking to YOU

The last night I was in Shanghai, just before returning

to the U.S., I went for a foot massage with my brother-


We had just eaten at a Lebanese restaurant a few doors

down and were raving about the food to the others in

the room. Although all of them worked a mere three

doors away from this restaurant – NOT a single person

knew where it was. Nor had they heard about it.

My brother-in-law wondered how this could be. I

replied, “It’s real simple. None of them have any

interest in this type of food – so they never see it

or hear about it. It’s not part of their reality. But

IF they wanted to eat this type of food, they’d

discover the place right away.”

When I was a personal trainer I had a prominent set

of billboard sized-signs sitting right at a traffic light

– right next to my gym. On the sign I had the words:

“Come Train With Me.”

Over and over I had men and women enter my gym

AFTER they made the decision to finally get fit and

hire a personal trainer to help them.

I cannot begin to count how many of these people

told me, “You know, I live in the area. I drive this

way every single day. Yet I never saw your gym

or your signs until I set a goal to get in shape.”

Amazing, huh.

Yet that is how your mind works. Your brain has

a goal seeking function and it tends to ignore

what isn’t relevant to the goals you have in life.

Ever buy a new car and noticed how it’s ‘everywhere’

AFTER you’ve bought it. It’s a pretty common experience.

So is thinking about someone – then having him or her

call you.

A couple days ago I sent you an email on “The Best Advice


A great many people actually thought I was thinking of them

whilst I wrote that email. They truly thought I was answering

one of their questions.

And I was – but it also happens to be true that the question I

was answering is so basic and fundamental to being a human

being that a LOT of people will think, “He’s talking to ME.”

Yes, I am talking to YOU – if you’re open to the message. If not,

I don’t even exist.

This is why it’s so important to have goals, why it’s important

to have a series of questions that direct you toward the people,

places and information that can help you achieve your goals.

Each day when you get up, think about what you want and keep

your mind off what you don’t want. Learn to obliterate your fears,

worries and doubts. It’s not hard to do if you’ll get around those

who are doing it.

Last night I sat with a young man who wants to make a career change.

It involves moving from one area of the country to the other. I believe

the move will help catapult him to the next level of success. But all

he sees are the potential negatives, the things he fears.

He asked me how he could get rid of his fears. I spent less than five

minutes showing him what to do and his face went from uptight

and stressed out to relaxed, calm and confident. What I taught him

was simple and easy to do – yet he had never heard of it before and

I doubt anyone else has either because I made up the technique.

At any rate, this man is immensely talented. He can walk through walls

if he makes up his mind to do so. There is nothing and no one standing

in his way. Yet before last night he was holding himself back.


Because he was afraid.

With his fears obliterated, though, he is truly a different person. He

walks different, talks different, looks different. He even breathes a

completely different way.

He will carry something special into all he does and others will feel

it. When he’s free from fear he’ll be in a Zero Resistance Mindset and

this is the sort of mindset that attracts success.

Fear on the other hand repels success. Fear repels career moves for

the better. It repels businesss and cash. And the key to turning this

around is NOT learning the latest whiz bang marketing or business

technique. All knowledge helps – including knowing how to market

yourself – but the fact remains that you will avoid promoting yourself

and doing whatever it takes even if you KNOW what to do – IF you

are living in a resistant or repellant mode.

You owe it to yourself to learn how to attract more and resist less.

Best Advice a Father Can Give

It hit me like a ton of bricks.

I couldn't believe I'd "missed" it before. I'd read the book many, many times – but this time was different. A "secret" was revealed to me – and today I'm going to give it to YOU.

If you are open and receptive to this passage – you can expect a major breakthrough from what you are about to read.

I suggest you be OPEN.

Here's the passage:

"Psychologist David Seabury says that the best piece of advice his father ever gave him was to practice positive mental imagery – immediately and "on cue," so to speak, whenever he became aware of negative feelings. Negative feelings literally defeated themselves by becoming a sort of "bell" which set off a conditioned reflex to arouse positive states of mind."

Now read this passage again. It comes from the 35-million copy best-seller, Psycho-Cybernetics.

Pay particular attention to the following words: "the best piece of advice his father ever gave him…"

Those words set the tone for for what the rest of the passage reveals.

Why. Because whenever something is the "best piece of advice" someone can give you – especially your father, it had better be GOOD.

In reading this passage I not only see this as the best advice I can give my son – but myself, and everyone I teach at my seminars and in my coaching programs.

So many people wonder why I am always so calm, cool and collected. Many wonder how I am able to speak before a crowd in a non- chalant, totally relaxed way and still have everyone totally riveted.

Most of the reason is because I have no thoughts of resistance when I speak. I'm not concerned about offending anyone. I'm not even trying to get people to like me. I am simply ME, take it or leave it.

Very few people are this way. They're trying to figure out how to get others to approve of them or like them. Not a good strategy because the more you NEED others to like you the less they will like you.

Same goes with money. The more you NEED it – the more it will stay away from you. Money and friends go where they are wanted – not where they are NEEDED. There is a world of difference between want and need. One attracts. The other repels.

Even if you think you NEED money or NEED friends, so long as you have this thought you are in a repelling state of mind. Never NEED anything. Want is all you want. Want comes from a vibration of "I'm happy already and I'd like to have this, too." Need comes from a vibration of "I'm miserable and frustrated and I need this thing to make me happy."

Become aware of negative NEED feelings when they arise – and if and when they do – learn, through practice, to have these feelings immediately trigger the thought to change your vibration into a "feel good" one.

Most people have never been taught this by their fathers – or by any other teacher. They've been taught to set goals, to have a burning desire, to be optimistic and have a positive attitude.

But what do you do when you look at your bank statement, or your finances and you immediately begin to feel bad? What do you do when the reality of your situation begins ruining your day? What do you do when you're feel frustrated, fearful and worried? You do what Dr. Seabury's father told him to do and what I'm telling you to do

First, you "recognize" that you are feeling bad.

Second, you understand that this "feel bad" vibration REPELS what you say you want. Your want is not a want. It's a need that comes with the expectation of something outside of yourself making you happy.

Third, you recognize that this "feel bad" imagery sends a signal to the Universe that you cannot be happy "for no particular reason." And that's not good.

There is a balancing act you are to learn between having a burning desire and having a desire that burns you.

On the one hand having a burning desire creates the necessary mind-set that will create the thing you want. On the other hand, if the desire is connected to "I'm miserable unless I have this thing" – then you are chasing success and that success will always run faster than you do.

Your objective is to attract success; not to chase it. Chasing success is repelling success. You never get what you are chasing. At the end of the month you always come up short; you always need a quick fix. And fixes don't fix anything.

Several years ago a man sent me an email in which he said I was "chasing the almight dollar." I had no idea what he was talking about. I couldn't even form a mental image of myself doing what he was writing about.

What the man was saying was a reflection of what HE thought I was doing.

He was wrong. When I chased the almight dollar – and I did that for years – I had no money. When I stopped chasing and learned to attract it – it flowed into my life so fast I was nearly knocked over.

Continually alter and improve your mental pictures so that dollars are chasing you. Anytime you begin feeling as if you're no longer attracting – then look at what you're picturing in your mind and see if you're repelling more than you're attracting.

At all times the forces of attraction and repulsion are at play. It's simply a matter of how strong the forces are. If you're repelling energy is stronger you go deeper into debt. If your attraction force is stronger you get wealthier. If both are equally strong, you feel "stuck."

Now the question is, what do I do if I am repelling more than I'm attracting?

The answer:

1. You change the way you feel by changing the mental picture you have of your situation. Everytime you feel the negative feeling, it's an alarm that triggers a positive one. A bell goes off inside. "Uh, oh. Not good. Change the mental picture." You do this over and over and the feel bad vibe lasts less than a second and you're back to feeling good. Essentially, no one will ever know you even visited the feel bad emotion. It was "here and gone" in the time it takes to click a new photograph.

2. Begin each day with Theatre of the Mind exercises so that you go through the whole day without resistance. Don't just read positive messages or books. DO the exercises. Stand before the mirror and speak. Picture what you want when you speak. Sit in a chair and use your creative imagination. Recall previous successes and link them to your future.

3. Have a burning desire in mind, a goal. But at the same time don't expet the goal to give you happiness. You don't let the desire burn you by feeling bad if you don't have it yet. In fact, even though you WANT the goal and put your heart and soul into creating what you want – you are also able to "walk away" from the goal emotionally. There is no expectation of your desire giving you anything other than the thing you desire. For example, if you want more money – you don't expect more money to give you happiness. You simply want more money – and you put yourself into happiness mode NOW.

If you're happy even though you don't yet have in your possession the thing you want – then you are attracting it to you.

If you're unhappy because you don't yet have in your possession the thing you NEED – then you are repelling it.

So get happy NOW – not later.

Recognize that fear, frustration and angst are only there to help you change course. They're there to help you see that your mental picture is off-target. Put the right mental image back onto the screen of your mind and watch how the Universe lines things up in your favor.

Spit or Swallow the Seeds

No, this is not what you may have been thinking. Where’s your mind, my friend?

This is about whether or not to spit out your watermelon seeds – or chew them and swallow. Or simply swallow without chewing.

There is some debate on this subject. Some claim that seeds are the most nutritious part of a fruit – especially fruit like grapes.

My friends in China almost always swallow the watermelon seeds. They never spit them out. I’ve never seen anyone but myself spit them out and in the picture you’re looking at now, I’m about reading the let go of a half-dozen.

Key thing, as far as I’m concerned is that you enjoy your watermelon. I tried chewing the seeds and swallowing. I did this for about a minute – then I went back to spitting. Tis not my cup of juice, if you get my thrift.

Make sure you eat your watermelon on an empty stomach. And remember: It’s the perfect treat after using the Matt Furey Exercise Bible. I think it’s like manna come down from heaven.

Eating Hami-gua

Here in Xinjiang there is a fruit known as Hami-gua. You’ve seen them back in the U.S. but they’re size

of a cantaloupe. In fact, that’s what this fruit is: a cantaloupe. Only difference is that in this western province

of China, it’s the size of a watermelon.

I’m not normally a big fan of cantaloupe or muskmelon. I much prefer watermelon straight watermelon – but I

must say I was so doggone hungry yesterday whilst traipsing through the mountains that I broke down.

I asked the vendor if I could buy half a hami-gua. He agreed, sliced it with his butcher knife and my teeth

sunk into the fruit.

Wow. Like the watermelon, we’re talking sweet, sweet, sweet. And the flesh of this fruit was incredibly filling.

I couldn’t even finish the half I bought. Had to have my brother-in-law help me out. In contrast to this I can easily

pound half a watermelon, and on some hot days have been known to wolf down a full one without assistance.

Shortly afterward I’m able to workout, too.

Yesterday was a busy day for me and my melons. A couple hours after eating the cantaloupe I dined on some

lamb kebabs with watermelon. Normally I don’t mix my melons with other foods – but yesterday I was hungry as

a bear, that’s what mountain trekking will do to you – especially in the high heat – so I managed to get away with

the mixture.

In the mid afternoon, after visiting a Taoist temple I contained to climb upward, then stopped when I was about

6500 feet above sea level, took out the Matt Furey Exercise Bible and began cranking away. Nothing like training

when the sky above you looks like a Van Gogh painting. Not to mention the pristine lake beneath me. Twas

heaven me thinks.

Am I Buddhist

People often wonder about my religious beliefs.

Some question: Is he Buddhist? Is he Hindu? Jewish?

Moslem? Catholic? Christian? Or some combination of all of these.

Fact is I am friendly with virtually all relgions and have no trouble respecting you for what you believe.

It’s not really any of my business anyway especially because I can fit in with most any group of people

– regardless of religion, color or creed.

But – and this is a big BUT – the one group of people I do NOT identify with are the fat, lazy people who

worship drugs and booze. I don’t enjoy spending time with puffers, tokers, pill-poppers and shot takers

– or negative go-no- where types.

In their presence I pull out a copy of the Matt Furey Exercise Bible and begin praying.

My prayers are exercises done in a meditative way. I do Hindu squats, Hindu pushups, table makers and

v-ups while observing my breath and counting my reps.

All this puts me into a blissful, peaceful and powerful frame of mind that many envy.

and the world.

Sugar on Watermelon

Long before I arrived in Xinjiang Province in Western

China (above Tibet and below Siberia) I was told that

the watermelon, the grapes, the lamb and everything

else was BEST in China.

This morning I filled my plate with watermelon at

breakfast. Whilst taking the first bite I turned to my

brother-in-law and said, “They spinkled sugar on my


He laughed. “No they didn’t. In Xinjiang the watermelon

is very, very sweet.”

I doubted him as I kept eating the fruit that I swore

was sweetened. Sure enough, he was right.

Later in the day, after getting a shave we went to an

outdoor market and bought a watermelon, had the

vendor slice it for us right there – then both of us

squatted and ate it on the sidewalk.

No sugar – but it sure tasted like it.
